Looking to downsize! Move out of the burbs and into a condominium.

I recently read an article about the Pearl District . One of the "Hippest" neighborhoods in the country. I am not sure I am ready for hip or not but might be worth checking out. Pros/cons?

The Pearl District is a fantastic area... but not always the right palce for everyone! I specialize in the condo and loft market so I am very familiar with the pros and cons.
Let's start with the cons: 1) It is reasonably expensive compared to other condo/loft areas such as downtown or South Waterfront. 2) It can be a little noisy for some people, others don't seem to mind.
Pros: 1)It is just a great, livable area. Tons of great restaurants, art galleries, work out facilities, coffee shops etc.
2) The price is a little higher but you are paying for convenience. It's pretty nice to be able to walk 1 minute to your favorite coffee shop.
3) Safe. Most buildings are secured buildings and many have full time concierge. There are security patrols on the streets in the evenings.
4) Walkable. Easy walking to parks, the river, downtown. Also a real plus if you ride bicycles or are a jogger!
5) Easy access to freeways.
6) If you end up with a second "winter" home in the future, which many residents do have, it is much easier to just lock the doors and go and not have to worry about maintenance issues like you would with a home.
I could go on and on about the Pros. I would be more than happy to set up some tours for you so that you can get a feel for the neighborhood. I would also suggest checking out downtown and South Waterfront just to compare. I have worked with people that originally thought they wanted to live in the Pearl that ended up buying in South Waterfront because they liked things just a little bit quieter. All great areas!

Your budget is another consideration.  There are several very nice high rises at the higher end of things, and some lofts in converted industrial buildings at the lower end.  Personally I have not owned a lawnmower for 20 years and don't miss it a bit.

great poximity to food and entertainment. exterior maintenance is covered by HOA. cons- hoas can be relatively high and you do still have property taxes for your share of the interest in the community. Take an afternoon, morning, and night to head down there and see if you like th atmosphere and what it has to offer, for some they wouldnt have it any other way!

Great walking community, nice parks, upscale restaurants, easy transit, in a word - convenient. Of course, the con would be that is probably is not as quiet as a suburb can be.
