I suggest you speak with a lender.  A Broker.  Try a larger company like Nova Home Loans.  I wish you luck, Tiffany

Define 'poor credit'
That is very subjective......

Do you have some dings?
Moderate scores?
or never paid a creditor?

We can't help you without more info....
And while I do loans for people with credit issues, ALL LENDERS will have some minimum requirements for scores and credit.

If you have poor credit, probably now is not the right time to buy.  I like the suggestions about getting with a loan officer, see where you are and what you qualify for.
Poor credit is often a reflection of your financial situation and ability to pay bills on time, so most people don't want to give you a loan if you don't pay on time or have maxed out your spending....and buying probably won't help as there are even more expenses....bigger electric...bigger water bills...etc.
Take the next two years as a challenge.  Go to Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey.   Live as far below your means as you can stand.  Rent cheap...pay off bills...pay down credit cards...pay on time or early for all your bills.   Don't eat out....no vacations.....Downsize cars if possible.  Save for a down payment and closing costs.   Have six months of reserves.

Sounds impossible right.....it's not.  Plenty have done it.

Do you have a range of your credit score... there might be va loans that you qualify for.

this is a question to be answered by a loan officer
===================
Yet you chose to post your answer on a MORTGAGE forum; one that is populated by mortgage loan officers.

since we don't have the expertise

...nor a mortgage origination license either.

anyhow, poor credit is a relative term; providing further details would be helpful in eliciting assistance.

In my humble opinion, this is a question to be answered by a loan officer and one that works with VA loans on a regular basis. Once you discuss your situation with them, they can advise what can or can't be done in your situation more than a Realtor® can since we don't have the expertise on the financing rules and regulations. I wish you the best of luck in this process.

You need a home, but you need to rent it, not buy it.
