Madison Park restaurants - why are they so weak?

Here's my rant for the day: I think that the stores and restaurants of Madison Park aren't living up to their potential. We have terrific homes in the neighborhood, and the location is fantastic. But why do our shops and restaurants stink so much? Sure Nishino is good (though it's not really in Madison Park, is it?), and I like Thai Ginger and Madison Park Cafe (for brunch). And Bert's and Starbucks are institutions. But other than that, there are about 20 stores that are just so-so. I jealously look at stores and restaurants in nearby Capitol Hill (e.g., 15th Avenue) or Queen Anne and wonder why we can't do better...
Am I being too critical?

While there is not a wide array of shops and restaurants, and I would tend to agree that the area could benefit from more, the Attic is an institution and should not be dismissed as it is a great place to watch a game and eat great bar food. Also, the wine bar across the street, (name escapes me now), is quite good. Apparently an upgrade from its predecessor.

Rumor has it that Sostanza Trattoria In Madison Park, is going to be turned into another coffee shop, just what we need...

I'm going to pile on here and say Madison Park could hugely benefit from a high end grocery/pre-prepped meal place, well. Something like Pasta & Co would really kill it in Madison Park. I use Nishino for my regular take out and, while that's about as good as it gets, it pinches my pocketbook a little.

Wow, I hadn't heard about Sostanza becoming a coffee shop. Thanks for the tip Dhiren.

I agree with Rich, the Bistro Bites needs to go away and turn into a Pasta & Co. Nobody mentioned Cactus or the strip of restuarants in Madison Valley with Cafe Flora, Rovers, Viola and ending at Harvest Vine...not in the "Park", but if your're a foodie, that area is very good for food.

I think we actually have a number of really good restaurants and fairly diverse. Bistro Bites offers a good low key lunch alternative - their sandwiches and soups are really good! I think the weakest restaurant is actually Sorella - so so food and even worse service. For the premium location they occupy, we deserve a better restaurant. The Red Onion - I have a mixed feeling about it. I would be sad to see it go.

Instead of replacing Bistro Bites for Pasta & Co, how about getting rid of some of the so-so clothing boutiques catered to mostly 50 something women, such as Ropa Bella and Creme ? As Madison Park transitions to a younger generation, these shops do not appeal to the newer residents, let alone shoppers from nearby neighborhoods.

dorothy2004 - i totally agree with you. What is the deal with all of those random bad clothing stores?

The folks who live in the condo towers support all those clothing stores. Same with the fabric store...who buys fabric these days?? It's unlikely those condos will ever appeal to anyone but retirees. While the rest of us are working in the office or whereever, these folks are shopping at those stores during the day. I agree with Dorthy above, Sorellas wins the prize for wasted space and bad food/service. I just shake my head when i pass by it.

Ditto Eric. Back to the topic of restaurants/shops, who does the planning in Madison Park ? Is there a Madison Park chamber of commerce/committee that decides what sort of retail stores/restaurants we want in the neighborhood? If so, it sounds like we need to make sure there is not a disproportionate number of one group vs. the other. Until then, all we can do is rant :)

i don't think there's any central planning, but i'm not sure. There is the Historic Madison Park association that is always referenced in the Madison Park Times Newspaper, but i'm not exactly sure what their deal is.
