When we took a look at this property there looked to be mold damage? -- How is this handled in since the bank is not likely to let us punch a whole in the wall to confirm.

First I would talk to the listing agent and share your concerns about the possibility of mold. Your second option is getting a home inspection. Find a qualified, licensed home inspector.
