Mold in Foreclosures

Profile picture for silveradomary51
We are looking to buy a house in Prineville, OR and some that we've seen online have mold in them. Is it safe to buy a home like this, and/or is there a way to get rid of this? These are on foreclosure homes.

Don't take mold lightly, it can cause serious health issues..even cancer.

I also agree with Darrell and Melina.  You must determine the cause of the mold.  Mold can be re-mediated, but it will simply come back if the cause isn't treated.

For sure, see the house first. Mold is less of a problem in Prineville than on the wetter west sde of the Cascades. A home inspector can tell you what to do, and you can adjust your purchase offer to the lender who owns the home accordingly.

I agree with Darrell that the most important thing is dealing with what caused the mold.  Typically you have to repair whatever water penetration is causing the mold, and then remove and water damaged and moldy components and replace them.  Some people try and clean/treat mold, but personally mold remediation is insanely expensive to have the mold experts do it, you're better off just removing anything moldy and replacing it.

We have a lot of mold in Oregon due to our weather.  If you are concerned about toxic mold you can always have the mold tested and it will tell you what kind of mold you are dealing with.

Hi Mary,
Are you saying that  you have visited the homes in person and seen mold?
You first sentence is not clear to me.
Mold can be remediated; its a case by case basis for each home. I am always concerned about what caused it!! That needs address as well.
