The headline sums it up perfectly

"Despite over-exaggerated negative coverage on the housing conditions, many local markets are actually seeing price increases," Yun said at a press briefing. "Mortgage availability is improving."
OMFG you have to be kidding me. I think it's time for the honest and ethical realtors to boycott this organization. It's killing the credibility of any NAR-card holding member.
Over-exaggerated negative coverage? How is it possible to over-state what is happening? Do these clowns realize that nobody is buying their crap any more?

I find it interesting how Yun is repeatedly telling people to not believe what anyone else is saying but to trust him completely. Kind of reminds me of a fascist regime. Except we have the luxury of just being able to ignore him (only after ridiculing his talking points at length).
I feel sick, my company requires me to be a member of NAR.... can I barf now?

- klarek the realist
- Contributions:7044
azrob, yes, barf. Why is it required? Is it that way with all companies? If you were to go indie, would it matter whether you were a card carrier or not?
The NAR has strong armed their own work force, does it really surprise you???

I'll hold the barf bucket for you azrob. Feeling sick is a sign that you have a brain even if the NAR doesn't. Remember, just because you are a card carrying RE Nazi, that doesn't mean that you are a bad person.

On CNBC today it was said that NAR says that while prices will most likely decline through the end of the year, they will rise slightly at the beginning of '08.
Oh, how I hate the idea of having to join that group.

The thing is that there is NO way they can possibly believe that. It's impossible. Yes, they are really stupid, but they couldn't possibly find an economist that could spin these numbers enough to paint a recovery happening in six months.
Oh, what I'd give to be a fly on the wall at their internal meetings. I wonder what kind of language they use to describe this tactic. Do they just say "this is the lie that we have to sell"? Or do they take a more tactical stance, like "if our message is blahblahblah, it will encourage the idiots to buy".
I just don't get it. Publishing information and making statements that are completely B.S. (and everybody knows it) isn't just immoral and unethical, it has to cross some sorts of legal bounds as well.

The original article shows you just what that journalist (or his editor) thinks of the NAR, too. The fact that they feel it's necessary to balance the story with quotes from other economic sources who are saying completely different things tells you what you need to know. If they felt the NAR's facts and quotes could stand on their own and tell the whole (balanced) story, they wouldn't need the rest of it.
You'll also notice they have already changed the headline - apparently someone (an editor) felt the original one was too strong-worded...even though it was merely re-stating something in the lead paragraph.

It is a numbers game with them.........many people believe the BS they read or see and will take it at face value therefore they will see nothing wrong with walking the plank and jumping off of it. Statistically there are more uneducated dimwits in this country, therefore they can sway more people to do what they want them to with their PR-BS. After all, someone had to be buying the spew in the election ads during the last presidential elections or Bush wouldn't be in office today.

"Seems like every week, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) finds a reason to pump residential homebuying by looking at numbers and spinning them to claim that down is up, white's the new black, a Jolly Rancher is a sprinkle. Worse yet, the business media -- even outfits like The Wall Street Journal, where they know how to add and subtract -- parrot the NAR party line. As a result, unless Joe Sixpack happens to drop by on a day when I'm watching the NAR, or frequents a more vigilant (and feisty) housing blog, he's likely to think things are getting better. That would be wrong.
Let's set the record straight, shall we? Pending home sales are not "up." They may be a fraction of a percentage point less bad than last month, but compared to last year, the NAR's index is down 18.4%. And that's only through October, before all the rest of the recent, dismal economic news came home to roost."

IMO The 'spin' chart in the above link is worth a look.
I like the JULY prediction: "Home Prices Expected to Recover in 2008 As Inventories Decline"
umm humm

The more I read these topics, the more I wonder if its possible that people will say and do whatever they have to in order to make money.
This is a very sad time in American history.
This is a very sad time in American history.
Sad, but not surprising really.
I saw a documentary recently on the entire royal line of England. It was amazing how many rulers were backstabbed and/or flat out murdered by close relatives or friends looking for a piece of the throne.
A few lies here and there to total strangers are nothing........

cabinfever, thanks for the link! I'm glad someone is documenting the dismal track record of NAR prognostications- I knew they were bad, but when you see a year's worth in one place....why does ANYONE take them seriously anymore?
Here's a link to a fun NAR webpage (granted, it's part of an insider "blog").

And if you wrong us, do we not revenge? If we are like you in the
rest, we will resemble you in that.
