Need advise for young couple in Brooklyn, NY

We are interested in buying an affordable (condo/walk-up/house) and need advise on a good location. We are a white couple in late 20's.  We would need a 2+ bedroom in a good location which has appreciation potential + close enough to public transportation (work in NYC) and some parks/good elementary schools. Not looking to spend more then $500k and would love to stay in Brooklyn; Staten island has a few options but we'd rather stay in Brooklyn. Any help would be appreciated.
