Neighborhood Boundaries

This looks to be an interesting and useful API.  My question is, however... can someone please explain to me generally what Zillow is defining as neighborhoods?

Are neighborhoods, locally defined terms that may, for instance, span multiple cities and/or another example, the multiple local neighborhoods defined within one city (for instance the marengo neighborhood of South Pasadena, CA)?

Thanks for the responses.

That's the tricky part -- there isn't a standard way to define neighborhoods. We did a bunch of online research and called city offices as well, and came up with our best guess using the resources available. However, we know they are not perfect -- that's why we released them via a creative commons license.

Attributing your sources as required by the Creative Commons license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/) would be a step in the right direction. This could be done at the feature level using one or two attributes. Then users would know where to go to find additional information from the original authors.

This seems like an interesting idea. What are you suggesting we track? Author names and a web address maybe? What would happen if Joe updates the boundaries for 5 neighborhoods in LA, then Paul comes after and updates another 5 (different neighborhoods) -- who gets the credit?

Good point. Perhaps you could include both "Author" and "Editor" fields. Editor would be limited to the last editor. The web address is a good idea; perhaps "AuthorUrl" and "EditorUrl" for additional info.

Why not make a neighborhood grouped by the school system?  Anything in the next school system over, isn't in my neighborhood.

So, I'm still confused.  Is there a specific formula zillow uses to come up with the neighborhood boundires?  or are neighboorhood boundries a subjective excersice?

Thanks,

Michael

Michael-

There is no specific formula -- we used as many sources as we could find and came up with our own definition. Neighborhood boundaries are "squishy" and we know our boundaries are not perfect, and that's a big reason that we released the files via a creative commons license.

StartANew,

I don't think Zillow can define neighborhoods as school district boundaries. A schooldistrict may have many neighborhoods in it. I work with both the boundaries for my website. You can see the overlay of Schooldistricts with Neighborhoods on http://www.rentrent.org.
