Odd Painting Area

Profile picture for BMFPitt
So I'm currently building a house that will have a family room with a vaulted ceiling and is right next to the kitchen (but the wall overlaps into the living room by about a foot.)  I was recently thinking about how I want to paint it.  I want to do different colors for the family room and kitchen, and one other color for the rest of the dining/living/hall areas.

I wanted to leave the ceiling unpainted (white) in all rooms, but this one seems like it may look strange that way.  As you can see from these pictures, it will be quite a task to do.  The top corner is about 17ft off the ground.

I'm thinking of just squaring these off, but I don't know how that will look.  I was thinking about a light yellow/tan for the family room (left) and a sage type color for the kitchen (right.)

Will leaving the ceiling white look that bad with a light color?  I really don't know if I'd want to try to paint it.

Concept view of the opposite side (there will be an island to the left, and a goldish carpet in the family room side.)  I think the oddness of the room makes me not want to leave the ceilings white, but I just really don't want to paint them, either.

I would agree with other opinions.

Normally white color fits everything, and for sure ill not look bad in with off while wall color.

You can check this program, plug the pictures and play with color on your computer. BM Personal Color Viewer

Lastly, most recomended with high ceiling is scaffolding, you can rent it in Home Depot for few days.

Good luck,

I think white ceilings would look fine. I can see the problem, but de-emphasizing the corner angle should focus more attention on the rooms themselves instead of the ceiling angles. I have seen people put block of color on the wall next to the ceiling and if the color is neutral and the ceiling is left white it looks nice. Strong colors look not so nice up high, but I can't tell you why that is. Probably some technical design principal.

This site here had some idea on how to deal with it by adding moulding that I thought were interesting.
