Old North St. Louis

Has anyone been paying attention to the development of Old North St. Louis. How do you feel about paul Mckees Plan?Or the work that has already been done? Do you think that area can make a comeback?

Toyin, the area has made a comeback. My family has a 40+ year history in the area. I remember shopping in the 14th St. mall and Parks Drug store  as a kid , then watch it become a real life ghost town and return to life. The Crown development is a big anchor, even though most of the renovations started with the Murphy Blair houses then  the houses North of Crown , along Hebert , Sullivan and Dodier etc. Now there are Habitat Houses going up on lots that were vacant for decades.

The McKee plan is something. I look at the past projects like Winghaven and North Park. The McKee area may not have been the best area but it was a neighborhood. I saw this development happen in McRee town. The difference was McRee town had 3-5 year turnaround from buyout , demo to construction to finish.
This supposed project is in year 12. It was 1999 when these people walked through the area with plans and the area hasn't been the same since.

That area has not made a full comeback. You can go down the streets like blair, newhouse , angelica and many more.and you  will see plenty of homes that need to be torn down. There are whole blocks of houses that cannot be lived in. I would say that st louis LRA probaly owns 70% of the houses in that area. The area you are speaking of were habitat is building homes is one section of old north st louis. To say that the entire area has come back is not true. Blocks away from the development you are speaking of are vacant new homes that the builder jumped ship on. Just sitting there with broken windows. The Bremen theatre has recently drawn some attention by efforts to restore it but nothing has happened. They only 6 months ago cleaned up where the nord st louis turnvein sat. that sat there for year as a big pile of bricks. Remeber old north st louis goes as far as windsor park. Im rooting for the area, but it has a long way to go.

Alot of good developments have happened in the area. 14th street mall being one and habitat. There are a few streets like park place that have stayed intact. since you grew up in that neighborhood youve been to piekutowski's, nice place. I would like to see them get the old factories out of the area. there are also alot of really nice rehabs  around the mall.

Lets stay on the same page. So you are saying Old north jumps over Hyde Park and then goes to Windsor Park. Check your map. N Florrissant, Cass, 70 and Branch.
Hyde Park is seeing a lot of development, Mallinckrodt, Salisbury and there is the one building on Blair that was a wreck, it looks like a new building. Are you speaking of the Bosley Estates on 22nd?

No,im not saying that. Im saying that Hyde Park is included in Old North
aswell as windsor park. Windsor park is only 3 streets over. I am saying that Windsor park is a rough cutoff for old north. That being said there is alot that needs to be done in that part of old north. The area is only as strong as its weakest link.  Until that  area starts seeing significant changes it will be a long road. I like the Work bosley Sr.  is doing on salibury and i hope he is able to complete the theatre and history center next door.  Hyde park is the backbone of the neighborhood. We'll see what happens next. Im not talking about bosley estates.
