Hi Georgie,
No, the new parking lot at Charley's is going to cause unforeseen trouble with the traffic flow through our beautiful little surf town. It is going to be a pay lot so many locals will not use it and so parking problems will continue. Furthermore, the one exit by the bank is the only exit so the traffic will be worsened on Baldwin Avenue. The traffic exiting the lot will flow only on to Baldwin which is already backed up most afternoons past the post office.
I have spoken with two county planners, off the record, that have informed me the project planners that approve 'projects' like this do not consult with the strategic planners or the traffic planners; so, the county has approved a pay lot that will in the end affect greatly the overall traffic pattern in town.
I think the whole thing is a shame, because some of these issues could have been abetted if the county simply took a better more strategic and comprehensive approach to planning our communities. Anyone can see that the current traffic problem in town needs to be addressed immediately, it is risking changing the whole character of the town as people rush to catch the next light on Baldwin just to get on to Hana Hwy on their way through town.
