Painted Brick

Profile picture for mfarm1
My home is half brick and half siding, I want to paint the brick. Do you think this will hurt me when I go to re-sell??

Thanks

Should the new owners want to reverse the paint, it is very difficult if not impossible, depending on the porosity of the brick. Plus sealing the brick may result in spalling as the moisture is sealed into the brick. Spalling is the flaking off of the face of the brick. Not pretty.

I dont disagree that it would end up being a high maintenance decision down the road. However I wouldnt think removal would be to big of a challenge. Woulndt power washing using a lower pressure with a "legal solvent" do the trick? Ive used solvents to strip dark finish off of fences so they could have more of a natural clear coat finish applied. Its turned out great for me.

Have to agree-- inside, yes but outside, no!

I don't know about impossible to remove paint from brick.  But it definitely requires heavy solvents which are taboo in these eco conscious times.

Painted brick is not uncommon.  It's a classic look that many people, including myself, love. If the coatings are applied correctly you should not have any problems with peeling.  Of course, it is nearly impossible to completely reverse the process.  Just make sure you hire a professional painter to do the job.

I also agree with the above.
Perhaps you were being influenced by one of the shows that repainted an indoor brick fireplace, which is entirely a different 'ball game.'
Do what gives potential Owners of the futures the widest range of options
without making decisions that make that impossible for them, is, I believe, the general 'gist' here. Lots of Luck, in 2009!

Painted brick is bad. Its like putting cloth seat covers over leather seats.

I suggest looking into the paint color of the siding.

yes.  Painted brick is difficult to do in an exterior situation so that it sticks properly and doesn't result in peeling paint.    It is also, IMHO, incredibly ugly!
