Painting Brick with a Whitewash?

Since August 2009

I have a brick ranch house and don't like the way the brick looks and want to paint it with a kind of whitewash effect that I believe doesn't require a lot of maintenance. At least, not as much maintenance as a regular paint job. Has anyone out there done this?

Southern Living magazine had an article a few years ago about choices of paint, with examples of brick homes that had been transformed. You could check to see if the magazine has the story in its archives online.

The piece of advice I remember is not to go stark white, but a creamy tone.

The photos used with the story seemed to illustrate the point as good advice. The stark white makes a brick home look chalky and commercial - like those car-part, gas station or convenience store cinder-block buildings in bright white. The creamier tones, a little beige or taupe in the mix, gave the home a more appealing and less "cold" look.

I think the use of primer and type of paint must be specific. If you have a rough brick, rather than a smooth brick, then it will be more difficult for the paint to adhere and will need many, many coats so that it won't look as if you started and stopped. Check with paint experts, but I think that generally people with the rough brick are told to not paint and leave well enough alone.

If you have cable, they do this a lot on one of the shows called "Curb Appeal". It can really change the way your house looks. Check out their website to see if they have any recommendations/tips.

use a solid body latex stain and brush it on,it will take you a while but you can control how heavy/light it goes on

It's always easier to paint than remove the finish later if you change your mind. Check with a local builder supply store that sells special masonary products.

This is not a good Idea especially if you get any rain Bricks need to breathe
and painting them traps additional moisture in your home thus creating possible mold. Dan

That's right, I ended up with mold in my garage after painting it. Now I have fuzzy spots on the walls that I am always going after with the bleach!
