Please help Zillow design great home improvement features

I'm living through (really "living in") a remodeling project right now. We're supposed be done by Christmas. So, this subject is near and dear to me. Ok, maybe too near, perhaps ;-)

At Zillow, we're digging into the home improvement/remodel/repair space. It's been fun to read through all the posts on this board. Boy, there are lots of great problems & helpful opinions. There are a lot of great sites outside of Zillow which we've been exploring (and likely some cool ones we haven't found).

But, this space is huge and the possibilities are endless, so we'd love to hear what would excite you. Do you care more about home improvement or repair? Are you a DIYer or a pick-up-the-phoner? What kinds of features do you think Zillow should do? What information do you wish you could find that you can't? Let your imagination run wild here...let's see what we can cook up together. Thanks!

Hi Kristin,

I just finished my third home improvement/remodel/repair of homes over the last nine months. Everything from installing an elevator to adding heaters under a ski condo's tile. I am a pick-up-the-phoner and have added panasonic internet cameras so that I can watch what's up when individual contractors are doing their thing.

I think that it would be valuable if zillowers could comment on individual contractors in their area. You'll have to build it so a person could only praise or complain once. It would be nice to also be able to review a contractor's comments by area or name.

Using internet cameras is a creative way to keep an eye on things if you can't be around. My husband works from home so he's there a lot.

You're right, it IS hard to find great contractors and it makes a world of difference. We worked with a tile installer from a previous remodel I would have steered everyone clear of, but we have recommended our general over and over. Without a feature like this, the info only makes it to our friends.

Kristin,

I think that this particular Board is helpful for home buyers whether they are first-timers or seasoned homeowners. The topics are interesting and there is a lot of good information on here for people looking to fix up to sell or just maintain their property. I wouldn't mind a section for people who own old homes (50 yrs plus) since the construction is very different and the repair issues are often more complicated. Thanks.

Hi Kristin, just joined and am picking up the thread, but just feeling my way around right now.

Kona Kid, hello and I would be interested in knowing what model cameras you are using and the options for offsite monitoring via wireless etc.

thanks to all

Hi sas912,
Boy you're right about older homes. We spent 4 years gutting and fixing a home built in 1900 (ancient by Seattle standards) and it definitely had its challenges. I'll keep that in mind as we contemplate the future. Please keep the ideas coming y'all. -Kristin

Jrs Jim:

We are using a Panosonic (BB-HGW-700A) network camera management system with a router attached to a cable modem. It's about as plug and play as you can get and supports both wired and wireless Panasonic cameras. There is an outdoor low-lux (BB-HCM371A) camera with two way communications, one camera (BL-C131A) with a microphone, and two cameras (BL-C30A) that just view. All four can be rotated to look around and I have sloted (BL-CA51A) the inside cameras into the wall and they work wirelessly. You should understand that wired does work faster than wireless.

This system can contact you by email if there is any movement detected. All four cameras can be viewed at the same time on a single internet enabled computer or phone. The cameras can be put into and taken out of privacy mode manually or over the internet.

It's by far the best investment we have made for any rental. You will need to purchase and place a few 24/7 video surveillance decals around to make it all legal.

We also use Insteon and x-10 lighting/phone answering systems to turn on and off lights from our home when we really want to see what's up. It does impress people to see lights go on from 140 miles away and we'll all have this stuff in another 15-20 years.

I'll be waiting patiently for my Panasonic marketing check :)

I'm a DYIer. My wife and I just picked up a second place out of town and are working on it on weekends. It needs a lot of work and I've always lived close enough to work on projects during the week when I have some free time. Not sure how long the fixup will take on this schedule.
