Plumbing repairs for 5 days. Is landlord required to pay for hotel and food per diem?

We have a 15 month old child who can not be in the house while they are tearing down the walls for replumbing. The plumbing company is offering to pay $600 for the hotel. We can NOT afford to eat 3 meals a day out for 5 days, but the landlord is not willing to pay for food. Should this be our responsibility?

You can check with a local tenant association to be sure, but I think food is your responsibility. You can ask the plumbing company for a hotel with a kitchenette or at least a microwave to reduce your costs for meals. You can also ask for a less expensive room and see if you can apply some of the $600 to your additional expenses.

Breakfast is pretty easy to do in a hotel. You can choose a hotel with a breakfast or see if you can get a room with a minifridge so you can have cereal or fruit or even oatmeal if you get creative with the in room cofffe pot that some rooms have. Lunch can be sandwiches with cold cuts from the store, ramen, soup etc. You can go out for dinner or can bring something inexpensive like a grocery store rottissere chicken or something back to the room.

I know it is a difficult situation with a toddler, but I can tell you from experience that you do not want your 15 month old around construction dust or debris. It is really hard on them emotionally and the dust can be tough on their lungs if they are opening walls.
