Plumbing

I"ll be away from our cabin for a month and it will freeze.  First I shut the water off at the street - I drained the pipes by opening the lowest spigot - I turned the LP gas water heaters to low.  Will this work?

I have also seen people put antifreeze in all the plumbing traps ( toilets & sinks ) so the standing water in them doesn't freeze also. Just a thought.

You should turn the gas water heaters completely off if there is no water in them.

If your plumbing is run thru the attic, opening the lowest spigot will not usually completely empty the pipes of water and you'll have to use an air compressor to ensure you've got all the water out.

It may work, but.... water systems are not usually designed to be drained, as they operate under pressure.  To assure you have drained all the water, you would need to drain the water from each faucet at each sink etc.  Another way is to use air pressure to replace the water with air.

What you have done is prevented damage to the house  by a broken pipe while you are away. Good job.    Be careful when you turn the system back on, as there may be damage from freezing .
