Question regardng high schools.

What determines which public high school your children go to? Is it strictly a districting program or could you register to a high school closer than the assigned school? Im looking for a good school system to purchase my family home, in and notice that a few have good schools that are actually closer than the ones that zillow/redfin say are "assigned" to that area. This seems absurd. Please advise.

Being close to the school should not be a major criteria. You really need to research the school to see if it has the programs and quality that best work for your child.

Also keep in mind that most of the students in your neighborhood will attend your assigned school.  Having your child go to a different school than the other children in the neighborhood could result in exclusion from local activities. A big component of High School is the social aspect of developing relationships and enjoying activities together.

By the way, if you live less than a 1.5 mile from a school you do not get transportation. Unless your pick up area is recognized as extreme safety area such as busiest street in town.

Another exception is if there is a lot of crime in the school which compromises your kids safety. This also lets you move a kid to a different school. The only problem with all these programs is that you don't get to choose which school you move to unless there are not too many schools. Exception to the rule are always homeless families. They can walk into any public school and have to get accepted on the spot. Please leave a good review. Real estate is my life.

In Illinois kids are assigned to home school. Every school has its boundaries. If you live within its boundaries, you have to go there. You can go to any private school but you might or might not get transportation. The only exception is No Child Left Behind program and homeless families. Email me and I will help you. I work all over Chicagoland area.

Yeah, that's the thing. It is in a specified school district where the high school is about 3 miles away, while there is a better high school only about a mile away that is in another districts purview.

I think you can arrange to go to any you want, but you have to get the child there and home, the school won't if you don't live in the area the school covers.
