RE Agent can modify my Zillow Listing?

Profile picture for Mom_of_Four

I "claimed" my house on Zillow about two years ago, and filled in all the details about schools, neighbors, number of bedrooms, posted some pictures, etc. Then when we listed our house with a realtor I came to MY zillow page to indicate that our house was for sale and put in the asking price. I noticed that the house description was added by my realtor! How can they access my *passworded* zillow listing to change it? Is that even legal?

why wouldn't you want your REALTOR to be able to control that part of the marketing?

Dan,

Hmmm... maybe because they don't own the house and are acting only as a representative for the actual owner.

If they saw the owner had already claimed the house on zillow, they needed to do a little communicating with the owner regarding changes for marketing purposes.

Mom_of_Four,

I agree with you. I would also be disturbed if I found my agent was allowed access to my online property information automatically without my consent.

Mom -

Since Realtors sell homes (and owners own 'em), that's also how Zillow works. Surely you've given a set of keys to your listing agent? This is the online equivalent of that. When your home is on the market, both you and your agent can update listing information on the site; you should both be marketing the home and most sellers expect this of their Realtor.

If you don't like the way your Realtor is marketing your property, speak to them about it - you are going to be paying them and you should ensure that you're getting your money's worth. Frankly, it sounds like your Realtor's doing all the right things - you want them advertising your home on the big real estate websites like Zillow.

Actually, DavidG, I have never given a listing agent keys to my home. Although there are a few agents out there I would trust with the responsibility, most I wouldn't. Sorry, but that's how I feel about it.

Mom, in my humble opinion you should be jumping up and down and thankful that your REALTOR utilizes Zillow - you have chosen an agent to represent your marketing who is steps ahead of many!  You have won in the lottery - they know what Zillow is and remember it is a cooperative effort between you, if there is something specific in the marketing that concerns you, just let them know.  Congratulations on a great choice!

Michelle De,

Was the issue that the Realtor knew about Zillow and chose to utilize it or that they didn't communicate to the homeowner re: altering the Zillow info for marketing purposes? I read the latter.

Just because the Realtor might be doing the correct thing for a sale does not mean they should proceed without good communication with and respect for their client.

I would be more than happy to have my realtor use Zillow or any other venue to advertise my home.  What I'm worried about is how the listing was updated by ANYONE other than me without my consent or knowlege.   What password did they use?   Do realtors have access to all the listings on Zillow.com?  I never gave out the password so how was my listing accessed?  What is the purpose of setting up an account on Zillow with a password if other people can access it and change it?

I don't believe you need a password to claim a home. It's as simple as "promsing" that you can do what you are doing. I often do this with my listings which I don't post on Zillow. The magically appear and I edit them for accuracy with a simple click or two and re-typing the updated/correct info.
