Whatever type of grass you decide on (by checking with a local nursery) I believe sod would have a better chance of setting with a dog around try to give the sod as much time as possible without dog. Also if your dog is a female try training her to a specific spot. Female dogs urine will kill just about any type of grass especially new growth(fighting this myself). Good luck and hopefully you and your friend will have years of enjoyment from your new grass.

I suggest sod to give it a fighting chance with your furry person.

If you have a dog, I would do sod, that is unless you can keep your dog out of the backyard until the seed is WELL established. I don't know what part of the country you are in so I do not know what type of grass would be good for your "zone". Try visiting a local nursery, you should get excellent advice.
