Real-tor or re-lat-er? How do you pronounce it?

Profile picture for sunnyview
After watching dozens of commercials from the NAR, I am curious. How do you pronounce the word Realtor? This first clip here of an NAR commercial says Real-tor. This second clip here has a pronunciation more like Re-lat-er. I am wondering is the pronunciation just varies by region or if there is a correct pronunciation of one over another. Growing up on the West coast, I generally heard it pronounced Re-lat-er so the NAR commercials version sounds funny to me. Door number one, door number two or are they both correct.

Ha!
This is a pet peeve of mine. I hate how they pronounce it in those ads. NAR people (including their TV spokespeople) always say "real-a-tour." But normal people just say "realtur". The tv ads make me laugh when i see how they pronounce it.

I was taught "real-tor" because the word doesn't rhyme with "doc-a-tor". I always thought the radio ads on NPR did a great job.

This is also a pet peeve of mine. I catch even agents saying this all the time! It should be pronounced Real- tor,  no "I" -some say real-i-tor.

I think we're going to find a lot of us with that same pet peeve.  I remember reading a draconian memo from NAR on the use of the term on paperwork, pronunciation, etc.  They really push "Real - tore", but "Real - ter" sound fine to me.  It's two syllables.  Just keep that straight and you're ok.

Funny memo Sam. I can see why they might do that since it's a reserved brand name of sorts. Living on the west coast I never ever heard Real-tore before the commercials started airing from the NAR. Then it made me curious about what agents experience with the pronunciation was and if it varies by region or if the pronunciation was changing and I was just behind the times.

I never really realized that "realtor' rhymes with "doctor". I guess it's subliminal though!

Funny!  I wondered if this bugged anybody but me!  I also wonder if anyone who pronounces it, "real-a-tor" is bugged by those of us who say, "real-tor!"

"ay - jent"

I avoid the word that starts with R for exactly that reason.

real-tor is the correct way, it does bug me too when members themselves say "real-i-ter"

Real-tor   we have Doc-tors   not Doc-ters  The same laziness with the Docter is why people say Realter.
