Recently purchased home lower than taxed value

I recently purchased a home at a lower price than the county I live in has assessed the value for the home. Is this a reason for a request to re-assess my property tax? Or does the county re-assess it on their own when ahome is sold?

County will reassess automatically, you don't have to do anything.  Base rate will be 1% of purchase price, plus special assessments.

It can take 4-6 months so be patient.  You will get a pro-rated refund of any extra tax you pay.  You might have to pay one or two installments at the prior owner rate, but the excess will come back eventually to you.

You should make sure to file homeowner exemption, you will get a form in the mail soon if you haven't received it already.

Thanks Toni.

Excuse my ignorance, so does that mean I will not need to do anything with regards to getting the taxes lowered?

Cali,

Congratulations.  It was a long haul, but you stuck with it.  Your new price will reset the tax base and going forward, the price you paid will be the basis for future assessments.

Best of luck to you !!!

You can definately request a re-assesment - different counties and cities work differently so I'm not sure what the procedures are in CA, but I would contact the accessors office to inquire... Good luck - Hope this helps!
