Rental Scams

I have recently had several phone calls from people who find a rental property on a "list" site.  The pictures are of a house that is currently for sale.  The scammer has a story about having to leave the country and needs to rent the house.  In some cases, the home owners name hase been turned into a yahoo email so it looks pretty legit.  Do not under any circumstances send anyone money for a rent or house deposit, until you can get into the property.

It's a pretty common scam unfortunately. Hurts both the fraud victim and home owners alike.

One of our vacant rental properties received a notice that utility service had been hooked up by the new tenant. We had not found a new tenant yet. It was most likely the result of one of these scams. Landlords are wise to physically check up on their vacant properties and to scan the web to make sure their property is not advertised for rent by a scammer.

There is a similar scam where the scammer actually shows the property to the victim, takes a cash deposit, then disappears. Renters are wise to not give any money to anybody unless they can prove they are the landlord or their agent.

We have also had a lot of issues with rental scams in our area.  Several of our listing were found on a website listed as a rental.  Even in a rental it is buyer beware.
