Rentals Harassment

We have been dealing with a rental that was posted in July.  Now when we have paid all of our money for the rental $3200---we are not getting documents or keys sent to us. Is there anything we can do? Do we have any ability to take legal action?

You can hire an attorney on contingency but the amount is quite small for it to make sense for most attorneys to take the case, even if you were not scammed and the landlord is holding on to the deposit.

If this is a scam, I'm afraid you won't see the money again. But miracles do happen.

Sounds like a scam.  Did you look at the property first?  Who showed it to you? Did you try contacting that person again?  If you send me the address maybe I can find out some info for you.  -John

This almost sounds like the guy I dealt  with in Iowa, posing as a minister out of the country and asked me to send money for keys and documents. I went to Iowa to check it out and the guy is selling the house not renting it; he has the same name but is not a minister. You have to follow up and be careful with some of these online rentals.

Why would keys be sent to you? Why are you not getting these things in person?

You need to see what the landlord/tenant act says for your state.  You should be able to google for your state.

"keys sent to us" suggests that perhaps you were scammed.  Was the "landlord" out of the country and would send keys after you send a hefty payment?   Were they unable to tour the property in person?   Did you read Zillow's FAQ on scams and internet fraud before you got involved in the rental process?   It offers a number of ways to report the scammer to the local law enforcement.

You do not give enough information. Do you have a lease? Did you get a receipt for the $$$ you gave? Speak with an attorney
