There is a house on a short sale market and which is just accepting backup offers. Is it a good idea to have the selling agent write a backup offer for me on this house? He was the one who showed this house to us.
what provisions should I include in my offer? I am very new to home buying and want to make sure that I watch for things I should in this short sale.

Sounds like a waste of your time.
Short sales take forever. If the sale does not go through you would have a chance to write up an offer. Generally the bank only wants one single accepted offer presented to them at a time.
If you really love the house I would have their Realtor get your information to contact you first if the house falls through.
