Sharing An Office Space

Sharing an office... many of us have at one point or another. Sometimes it's just with 1 or 2 other agents, at other times it's like a call center for Realtors.

How do you handle phone calls when you have other agents around? Do you pretend they are not there? Do you worry they are listening in? Are you being analyzed?

Most agents don't handle this very well, and I can understand that. You shouldn't have to be talking in code to your client to protect details. The fact is, you have to plan your day a little more efficiently so you can make those phone calls with private information when you are not at the office around other agents.

How do you handle phone calls when you share an office? Please share.

You are right.  You shouldn't have to speak in code to your clients.  Your office space should foster confidentiality and privacy.  Sharing office space is a very precarious situation.  Any phone calls you get are overheard by others in your office.  Guaranteed.  And you are being analyzed.  I think any office should make available a confidential atmosphere; in face, it's your fiduciary duty as an agent or broker to maintain the confidentiality of all of your clients.

If you don't have a place where confidential conversations (they are virtually ALL confidential) are possible, then you need to physically leave your office to speak with your clients.

Thank you for the comment Rushel. I think the fiduciary duty to keep confidentiality is really being overlooked by many brokers today. Maybe not even considered when they suggest agents just come in to work in a wide open area where everyone else can hear.

I work from home. Only my dog is listening, though I thought he was sharing confidential information with the cat one time..,.

the good quality headphones can be used  - that allows multiple people on the phone to be in the same room - works quite well.

Thank you for the reply Marie. I totally understand using the headphones to be able to hear, and they do work. Do you have any concerns about others listening in on you when you speak (from the next cubicle or in a bullpen)? Or confidentiality not being kept?
