Interview a couple of agents that have closed Short Sales in your area. Ask them how they get there business. Agents that are referred usually try to do a good job for everybody they work with! You may ask others that you may know that had done a Short Sale and are happy with the job that was done. Knowledge is key, make sure they have closed at least 10 transactions. Good luck!!

I agree with Robert, make sure your agent has closed several short sales and not just say they did, try to get some proof. Agents love to say they have done this and that when they really haven't done anything. A short sale is a process depending on the bank that will take sometime usually 90 days from start to finish. But don't quote me on that because every deal is different due to the investor. You will be tied up with that agent for awhile so you want to make sure they know what they're doing.

Have someone with MLS access run sales reports for agents who successfully closed multiple Short Sale properties in the area.

Short sales require an agent who is detailed oriented, has patience, and also has great negotiation skills. Not every Realtor can successfully negotiate a short sale. Ask lots of questions of the agents that you interview.

Interview a few agents in your area who are experienced in short sales and hold a Certified Distressed Property Expert designation. This way you know they have the training and experience to handle the transaction to closing.
