city ordinances are online in most towns if you really want to check yours to be sure. the key is, not to assume based on location of someone else's sign. the sweep last year supposedly resulted in 7000+ confiscated signs- great for the city landscape, not so good if you lost yours. they don't return them (i've heard they recycle the metal ones and teh rest goes to the landfill but that is unconfirmed)

I am glad to hear that they are being more vigilant. I've lost count of how many illegal signs have caused terror in driving (blocking view of oncoming traffic) or tangling leashes while walking.
