Social networking and house searches

Recently there has been a barrage of seminars on using the various social networking sites to display homes and find Realtors.  Although there appears to be an abundance of Real Estate web sites to choose from, are consumers actually using sites such as Facebook and My Space to look for homes?  Since these sites are not really designed for that purpose, it would seem that consumers would use the Real Estate Sites first and foremost?  Any thoughts?

What I have seen with the social networking sites is that they are more valuable as a tool to stay in touch with folks and build contacts espeicially ones that you may have let fall by the wayside over the years.  The business social sites like LinkedIn or Plaxo seem more guided to professionals connecting up and networking with other profesionals as well as an easy effective way to touch a contact by posting or notification rather then spending the time for a personal email or call.  I have not seen consumers use the sites for actual home searching and more likely that will not happen as MLS sites and RE sites are far more effective at displying home information.  With that said I often get contacted from folks off of the social networking sites regarding their needs that I provide services for.
