When I find a house I'm interested in, I pull the stats at freedemographics.com, but it only tells 2000 stats. I also look at the elementary school. The school will have up to date demographics of the kids in their school. They will even tell you what percentage is free/reduced lunches, giving you an idea of how many poor you have in the area. For calif, I can get the school stats at the school site, and at the state level. The reason why the schools have that data available is for the fed funding, so you should be able to get it, also.
The other option is to rent. That will give you time to nail down secure jobs, and get to know the areas better.

DH says the Southfield area is safe; his sister lives there. His Mom lived in Rockwood, 10 minutes away. It's very family oriented, pleasant neighbors, and a nice area to raise kids.
You can go to NEA.com and get the scoop on any public schools in the 50 states. Truthfully, with unemployment so high in MI, I don't know if the number of kids on free lunch is indicative of the quality of family life. Many workers depended a lot on the auto industry and ancillary businesses for decent jobs. Now, they have difficult economic hardships due to unemployment.
Stay out of downtown Detroit.

I am not really interested in convincing you to life in detriot, I do not particularly want to live their either but it is better than living in New York (in my opinion) and that is really my only other option for my next step in my medical studies. That is why I want proximity to southfield because I will be spending a lot of time at providence hopsital. So 10 miles is not a solid number but a guestimate of convenience.

If you need close proximity to Providence, you could go north or west, someplace like Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Birmingham, the Bloomfields, even Farmington. I would advise staying away from Detroit, and for tax purposes, out of Wayne county...

Birmingham/bloomfield is the very best choice. lowest crime/best schools. Selling mine and will buy another in the same area.

Got a house in Southfield near Providence Hospital. Easy access to all the major freeways and roadways - M-39 (Southfield Freeway), M-10 (Lodge/Northwestern Hwy), and I-696. You can be ANYWHERE in Detroit metropolitan area with 15-20 minutes. Check it out - 17557 Cornell Road, Southfield, MI 48075.

I grew up in the area. It is most definitely not safe compared with 20 years ago. Some of the area is actually quite dangerous. Bars on the window kind of area. I dunno, I think I would look towards Farmington, Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Beverly Hills. If you have to, rent. The southern end of Southfield is an on-ramp to the freeway. The nearest shopping center - Northland - is scary. I cannot shop there anyway. I stopped years ago, people get robbed there. NOT A CHANCE. Add to this the fact that you can't sell a house in this area? Definitely rent. If you buy a house here you are soooo stuck.

Don't buy in Detroit. Prices are going to crash there. The economy there is in complete shambles.
