socalbroker, just so you know this question was asked in 2009. The date is small and light. It is easy to miss. It is just above the answer button at the bottom of the question.
Do not feel bad, most of us make that mistake once in awhile and most did several times when we first got here.

Call an Insurance broker, they have more companies to offer and are more knowledgeable. My experience with Agencies like State farm has been that they hire anybody off the street. We went through 2 agents in a few years. We were paying almost 15k for our home and Autos (High Value). Finally got fed up and found a broker, they got me more coverage and lower deductible though Travelers Insurance for only $4500. From what I have found out, companies that work with brokers are very selective choosing their agents. That's why you don't see one on every corner. I refer all of my clients to them.

Agents make a big difference. I'm a Farmers Agent, active in my local community, and provide regular policy reviews for my clients. These are qualities my clients appreciate. (we also offer competitive rates)

Liberty Mutual seemed to have better rates, but eventually I went with State Farm because their hurricane coverage was better. The deductible for Liberty Mutual and State Farm in my area of New Jersey was 5% and 2%, respectively.

Both companies are very good. In Washington State, Liberty recently bought Safeco Insurance Co. Rate wise, you will likely not be the best deal as there are other excellent companies that usually have better rates, but it depends on location, credit score and age and size of the home.
For affluent homeowners buying larger homes, I would recommend Met or Chubb as, in my opinion, these homes and clients need broader coverage than regular preferred policies.

I have been with State Farm for a long time. Love the access to my great agent. Once a year we sit down and see if anything has changed in our lifestyle or home. She will rerun and actually our premium was reduce this year.
I agree with the other 2 comments having a good rep is important.

I agree if the price is similar go with someone who's either referred to you or who's active in the community.

I live in SoCal, but have always had State Farm. As with everything else, I believe strongly that it's not just the company, but who your actual rep is.

State Farm or Liberty Mutual?
How is each of their customer service? Do they honor their policies if something goes wrong or do they make it really hard to make a claim? This is a very subjective subject, but any input would be greatly appreciated.
