You should pull a copy of your credit report. It is free. Remove any items that are incorrect or wrong even if they are small. The credit agencies will often do this over the phone. Also ask them to check on any payments that are listed in the past on the report as late (if there are any) and if the credit card company/loan agency etc. does not respond, the credit bureau will even remove them. It is fast and easy.Depending on the number of credit cards you already have you may want to consider having or opening a total of 3-5 credit accounts use them in rotation paying each one off at the end of the month. This way you will owe not interest, but will build your score over time. If you start carrying a balance, stop using them until they are paid off. Don't fall into the trap of revolving debt.

If you have sucessfully made those types of payments in the past, your credit score should increase just by using a little more credit and paying it off each month, by increasing your credit limits, paying all bills on time. The easiest way to raise your score is by asking each of your credit cards for a credit limit increase of about 5-10% of your current limit. Call them at least twice a year to ask for a credit line increase. You credit score is partially based on your availability of credit in relation to your credit used so is you have an average $300 balance on a $1500 limit card your score for that card (based on that 20% credit used)  will be lower than a card with a $2500 limit (based on that 12% credit used) even if everything else is the same.
You can also start by using credit for basic purchases to increase your score. You can do this by dedicating one card to grocery shopping only. make no other purchases on that card and pay it off every month. Since you will be using it a lot stick a card with a good interest rate, features and customer service. If you are afraid that you might be tempted to overspend, you can actually transfer each weeks grocery bill amount into your savings account on a weekly basis by ATM or online, so you know you will have the amount needed to cover the months bill when it comes.Â
