Tile replacement

hi, Im in the midst of repairing a broken tile, Im ready to put the tile in, but am not sure as to which adhesive to use, you see here's the thing, for what ever reason the original tile contractor made a bed of tile mortar around an inch thick, and after minimal research i have seemed to discover that the conventional 'thin set' is only usable for applications less than 3/16", hence the name '-thin-set', is this true, if yes what adhesive should I in fact use?

Did you take out just the tile or the whole mortar bed underneath the tile also ?
In this type of application the mortar bed is laid down first and hardens up. After that the thin set is used to adhere the tile to the mortar bed.

I would recommend calling a contractor and asking them, they are the experts. What caused the tile to break in the first place?

I used thin set in my kitchen floor 1/4" and it is solid after 14 years of use.
