Tiling over laminate countertops...

Good evening...

Can you tile OVER laminate countertops or do I need to remove the countertops and cut new plywood, add hardy backer, and then tile?

Thanks a lot

You will get as many opinions on this as you will "is it time to buy". If you want to do it right and be assured of NO problems, then basically you put mastic and screw down 1/4 inch hardy board and then tile over that. Use lots of screws, every 6" in all directions, and counter sink. If you have a lot of linial feet of countertop, it can save you a lot.

Try looking on the HGTV website because occasionally when they redo houses/kitchens they show this process so I'll bet they have a video on how to there.

Dear Kimberly,
yes, yes, yes. I suggest doing it right the first time. It may take longer but your results will be better looking and withstand the test of time. Shortcuts always show in the long run. You can take a class at your local Home Depot or Lowes sometimes your local comunity college will offer classes for this type of work. Good luck on your project!

I completely agree with Betina when she says "shortcuts always show in the long run". Last month my family and I stayed in a rental house that had tile countertops that had been hastily laid over laminate. It was easy to see because the underside of the laminate was still visible from beneath, the counter's features were all bulkier than they should have been, and the counter was higher than normal, the latter two problems because it was built up on top of a normal height counter.

In my opinion, as soon as you realize that the pretty tile countertop is built on top of laminate, it makes the whole project feel kind of cheesy. I'd do the extra work to pull out the laminate and do it right.

I agree with Andy & Betina, I have a good friend who is a tile contractor. He says it can be done BUT the height you will acheive may not work with your sink inset and the counter layout may not allow for the trim to fit in tight corners and after all your work you just might end up with a cheesy looking counter. Make sure your counters are sturdy, any wobble on your bar can crack the grout and pop your tile right off.

Actually I disagree. I did this on a home and had great results. The home is actually on the market again now ( 5 years later) with the same counters. If I was going to live in the home for 20 years I cant say I would have done it this way at the time, but after seeing how well it has held up I wouldnt be afraid to do this no matter how long I thought I would keep the home.

I talked with a professional tile guy and his advice was to use a razor knife and / or heavy grit sand paper to rough up the surface of the counter. this way the mastic would have something to bond to. I then used Mastic to lay the tile. It was easy and went quick with a good looking end result.

OMG they cluttered up my house. Kind of funny to see what someone else does with your old home isnt it?

There is a granite shop here that does overlays. You don't have to remove anything.
