rising food prices could cause worldwide turmoil and global political instability.
"A top United Nations official has warned that rising food prices could cause worldwide turmoil and global political instability.
Food price rises of more than 40 per cent in the last 12 months have helped spark riots and unrest in countries like Egypt, Haiti and Uzbekistan.
On Monday there were food riots in Haiti and there have been violent protests in Ivory Coast. Riots after price rises in Cameroon in February left 40 people dead."

Aldreth, Is this caused by the US dollar in decline? If so how? Is it because these countries are pegged to the dollar?
Heck, states in the US area already fighting about water..........it is just the beginning.
Does anyone know what soylent green is???
Akka, in those countries it would be about the insane prices of the oil used in shipping food to them. The Uzbek som doesn't buy you much to begin with, and when oil costs triple as they have in the past five years, they can't import food as cheaply.
Buy your food locally, and conserve gasoline!
"Does anyone know what Soylent Green is?"
Old home owners?
I dont know whats better, reading Aldreth or Drudge report
This has nothing to do with housing. MIXED BAG
Isnt that what they put in the meat you buy at wal-mart??
people eat food in their houses...
Plus riots could destroy many houses worldwide...
this is gay.
Housing is one of the best hedges against inflation. Talk about inflation fears equals talk about housing.
Yeah, nothing says buying a house like a food riot in Haiti. Mixed bag all the way.
"Soylent green is people!"...Charlton Heston movie "Soylent Green" 1973....the people of the future eat processed dead humans.
Also last movie made by Edgar G Robinson
Jeremy, just because Americans are decent enough not to riot after the ridiculous food price increases of recent years doesn't mean that inflation isn't affecting them. Maybe they *should* riot.
I think that this inflation is part of the Fed's "solution" to the credit crisis. A $600k house won't seem so expensive if everything else is twice as much as it should be, and it's the diligent savers who'll be left holding the bag. An empty, worthless bag.
Land that used to be cultivated for food in Latin America, Africa, Indonesia, South East Asia is being converted to growing crops for bio fuels. In other words, people living in those countries will not be able to afford food so we can have bio-diesel.
It's one of the problems with bio-fuels in general.
Plus the fact that they remove carbon from the soil that takes thirty years to return. As opposed to petroleum products which hold carbon that had already been removed from the planetary eco-system.
Many scientists are now taking a second look at the bio-fuel concept and saying maybe we ought to back off of this one.
You ppl need to grow a brain for crying out loud!!! who really needs food anyway? Its not even included in CPI which is proof alone that NOBODY needs that worthless crap anyway!!!!!
As cheapskate said, you CAN live on beer alone..it's a fact.
what if you hate beer?
Hate beer!?!?! WTF!
That would be a hate crime, dont know what that would intail, but cant be pretty.
LOL.........beer sucks.......unless it's really hot outside and it's a corona light with a slice of lime
Ok,....chick's point of view.. Standing down...for now..lol
Ugh, seriously ppl, the next 5-10 years are NOT going to memorable as the "good times"
Which is why I'd like to find a place with enough sunlight for a garden... can't grow veggies in the shade. See - it all comes back to housing (though not necessarily buying)... kinda... :)
come CheerTard, It's always good times!
I'll remember you said that....
Food Costs Rising Fastest in 17 Years
Retailing Chains Caught in a Wave of Bankruptcies
