Vinyl fence worth the extra cost compared to a board on board wood fence?

Profile picture for mephiston5

From a resale standpoint, is a vinyl fence worth the extra cost compared to a board on board wood fence? The wood fence will cost $3000 while the vinyl is $4750. Both are 6 foot privacy fences. I’d say of the houses in my neighborhood with fences, 90% are wood.   Thanks.

It depends on where you live.   If in the arid regions, wood is fine.   Here in the soggy country, a wood fence board often shows rot from the bottom within a very few years if dirt comes in contact with the board.  (While dirt in contact with the board is bad practice, home owners love to scootch it up so there is no gap).    When I replace sections of my current fence, it will be with some artificial stuff.

I think the vinyl is pretty ugly.  I see the benefits of course, but IMO, the wood is just nicer, I'd prefer that.  The vinyl looks like a big, white billboard.

We have equestrian fencing done in vinyl and have not had maintenance issues since we purchased it about about 7 years ago.  Meanwhile, my wood gazebo has cost us a fortune in maintenance each year.

Not an expert on this, but I almost bought a house 6 mo. ago that turned out to have a rotting, collapsing wood fence, a big turn-off. Home maintenence is hard enough, w/o dealing with wood fences or decks in snow or rain country IMO.

I have a PVC fence for the last 5 years.  Not only was it easy to install btu there is vittually no maintenance involved.  That would be my recommendation.

you may want to look into the new composit materials instead of plastic... the old shinney look is not actractive ... keep in mind that you will want to say in snyc with your neighbors... if 90% have wood, keep in flavor with the neighborhood, look like you belong and you will make more later... you can always seal your wood fence, too many time owner install but do nothing... and then yes they do look sad rather quickly... put a good coat of Thompsons or simular and you will have a nice fence for years!

Pinks:  there is "nonwood" fencing that isn't white (similar to the material such as Trex for decks).   From a few feet very few people know that it isn't wood.
