Thanks for the fyi.
You make some very valid points. It's unfortunate that we have to be reminded from time to time that there are a few amongst us that have very different motives than most who are honest and ethical.

What concerns me is when we get inquiries to show property, and it's the standard form resulting from when the person clicks on the box by the listing and sends to an agent.
I never really know if the inquiry is legitimate or someone who wants to get us on a mailing list. If there is a phone number and a full name, I might do it.
But Zillow also has their standard cautionary message that once we respond, that person will have our email address. Guess we have to rely on spam blockers and our own discretion on how to handle scammers and spammers.

We have been getting enquires through Zillow from supposed Buyers. It's the same old scam that's been around for years, saying they will send money from overseas and pay you a commission to help. I sure no one is falling for this. Be careful.

Don't ever send or receive money from overseas, especially from/to Nigeria. This applies not just to Zillow.

Thank you for the advise. There are always the bad guys out there ready to take advantage of the unsuspecting victim.

I have seen scams on craigslist where they are offering a house usually at a price too good to be true. They show you wonderful pictures, but do not tell you the address. They say they do not want to give out the address to just anyone because...get this..there are too many scams out there. They say that after you get pre qualified by them then they will tell you the address and the details. Do not send someone you have never met your personal information. Do your research. Your best bet is to call a Realtor, but if you happen to find a house that is not listed through an agency and you absolutely have to have it, do some research online. Try to find out who the owner is. See if there have been any complaints about the property and/or the craiglist ad.
Beware of a scam for a request to have listings sent and after sending the listings you get a reply that is very specific it's an offer to purchase (the 1st listing on the list) for full asking/does not want to see the property/will put $150k down and $5k down upon acceptance of offer/it's going to be a retirement home. It's an automated service if you e-mail them 3 or 4 times you get 3 or 4 offers to purchase with the same terms. Agents beware! If you want more info e-mail me.

Thanks for this post. Every year the scams get worse. We have had to sift through some and we have had some of our listings used for someone's craigslist scam concerning rentals. They advertise way below market rents and that they suddenly have to leave the country. They collect deposit plus 2 months and then move on. We didn't know what to do till someone told us to contact the local DA.We have had a small amount of contacts from Zillow turn out to be scams. Thanks again.

Excellent!
I usually get about one scam (that makes it through my spam filters) every day.
Just protect yourself!

The scams are always pretty easy to spot, but some of the emails that come in now at first glance look like they could possibly be legitimate.

Thank you for the reminder. FYI, I have had a few inquiries from just email addresses. The client doesn't want to meet at my office, supply a name, or phone number. I do not proceed until I have this information since agents have been lured into bad situations. We always ask new clients to meet at our office unless they have been referred by a trusted individual. When Zillow begins requesting phone numbers, that should help.
You mean the Nigerian Prince wanting to deposit 4 Million Dollars in my bank account if I only wired 20k to a Camen Island account to help him flee th country was a scam???
OMFG I already went out & bought a 2nd Ferrari :-o

Always be cautious of giving ANY personal information, even when the offer seems legit. I have seen many colleagues and friends over the years (including myself) fall victim to these scam artists.
It is an art, and they are very skilled at it.
