Watering restrictions/Irregation schedule

Profile picture for OC_agent

The local water district has required customers to reduce total water usage by 20 percent. To help reach that goal, irrigation schedules have been put in place. The days that Laguna Niguel homes should water are Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. They also ask that we reduce the amount of time we water on those days by 40 to 70 percent. For more information contact Moulton Niguel Water District.

Make sure you set your timer to those days or you will get fined. My neighbor just got fined $100 for watering on the wrong day.

The watering schedules are, as with many things done by government, wrong. The restriction on how long lawns may be watered will, in the long run, do more harm than good.

If you look at most websites that address this issue, including the UC info on this topic here, watering deeply and infrequently is a much better approach than more frequently and for shorter durations. The key is to make sure that the water is able to soak in, and this requires multiple short-duration applications during a single watering cycle. The restrictions that are in place encourage the exact opposite, a little bit applied more frequently - resulting in shallower root systems that are less drought tolerant and require more water.

I've tried to talk with my local water authority, but no luck.

The water issues in CA are tough.
Any chance of changing landscape to zero water usage?
Some love the look and some hate it
