For "safety" questions, I'd recommend trying the local sheriff / police department website. Compare their stats to where you currently live so you have an idea of what reality is vs. stats on paper.
Certain predators are required to register in TX, but even then, if they don't register, who knows. The Texas DPS website has a database on offenders that you can search.
