The number one question I am asked, is what is my home worth?
First, evaluate homes in your nieghborhood. What homes have sold in the last year that are most similar to your home? Size, number of bedrooms, kitchen and bath comparables, style of the home, number of floors, lot type, etc.. View is the big one, along with square footage. Dr. Hansen from WWU spoke at our Re/Max office and stated that views of water (salt or fresh), increase a home value by as much as 60%!! This is documented by thorough research. The best way to get a firm number is to pay for a full appraisal from a licensed appraisor. Banks require this during the loan process. For now, to save money, I would call an experienced Real Estate Agent with a background in design and possibly construction. Someone who truly understands the home, area and how to evaluate homes properly. This will get you on the right track!

John stated it very well. If your just curious and looking for a general idea, Zillow is a fine place to get a ballpark view.
If you are in need of a more solid number, a broker or appraiser is the way to go. If you are selling you will want to interview brokers anyway so this is a good place to start.

If you're asking what your house is worth, the best thing to do is to have a real estate agent or appraiser out to do a current market analysis of your home to let you know what it would sell for in today's market. Zillow provides a "Zestimate" of your home's value, which would give you a very approximate value, but even they can be off by up to 20% by their own admission.
The question would be, why do you need to know? Just curious? Are you getting ready to sell? Or are you thinking of refinancing to take advantage of today's low interest rates?
The reason I ask is that if you're going to refinance, the lender you choose can have their appraiser run a quick "comparable check" on your home to see if it's feasible to do the refinance without ordering a full blow appraisal.
If you're thinking of selling, your local real estate agent or Realtor can do a comprehensive market analysis to let you know what it would sell for in this market and that service is generally free with the understanding that they would at least be given a chance to list your home for you should you decide to move forward.
Hope that helps! Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.
