we spend a lot of time writing content about our neighborhoods we cover, adding photos, doing reviews of restaurants, etc etc.

Page ranking and targeting is not a one stop solution, sometime to achieve your goal you must know first what is needed to gain that position.
For example take Tracy & Tego site Albuquerque Real Estate
By adding this link to my post I am helping to build a link and Keywords
1 - Now everyone who wants to learn , go to Google and type the magic 3 keywords and look at the results
2 - For me Tracy & Tego show up in 3rd for Organic which is Great but if we want to be Number one then...
3 - So what does this tell you?
If you are Interested Let me know by posting here and I will set up a new Topic for any Interested parties , but be warned this is not overnight and requires a lot of work...
If we do this we can all work on one site a week and watch the results!

SEO is extremely important if you want a high ranking in Google, Yahoo and Bing (the only three search engines that matters). Yes, incoming links (from other websites, blogs, forums, social media, etc.) are very useful to improve your ranking. So is rich content. However, many RE webmasters only look at the surface of their website and forget about the underlying part, the section where search engine crawlers find the information they need. If your <HEAD> section is not search engine friendly, every minute and every dime invested in SEO is wasted. Forget about the KEYWORD tag (because major search engines completely ignore that tag) and concentrate on your TITLE and DESCRIPTION TAG. The Title should accurately reflect in 5 to 8 words the essence of your website. The Description Tag should accurately describe the web page in 140 – 200 characters. Both should display your most important keywords/keyword phrases.
Important: the keywords and keywords phrases you use in your title and description tag must be present in the main body text of the page.
Although the above is only lesson 1 of SEO, you will notice improvement shortly.
Also important: Do not forget you are not looking for as many visitors as possible, but for targeted visitors. Hence keep your market area in mind when rephrasing your title and description tag!

Links, links, links and blogging is the best way to get them. Set up a Blogger account and go at it. Make sure to include a link back to your main site in every post. Another way to get links is to comment on forums and blogs that will give you a link back to your site. We have been successful on our Albuquerque Real Estate site doing this. Sorry… I had to do it.

SEO is, and will always be, a predominantly "back end" issue, but a solid combination of Categories, Tags, and Keywords accompanied with "Solid, Useful" content will always generate the best "Google Juice".

There are a number of articles that touch on SEO on the Geek Estate Blog.
I attach a link to my website on all my emails, with a note encouraging a visit to my website.
