Why do you need so much space? To buy more crap you'll never use and can't figure out how to dump? I hope this is a new trend and we go back to living in little craftsman houses. You're destroying the earth living in your energy inefficient McMansion.

FlipofftheFlipper, it sounds like you're being facetious, but yes, 21 m^2 (6 tatami mats) is a standard apartment size for a single person in Tokyo.
The rent on such a place is usually in the $500-600 range, so young professionals making $20-30k can afford it easily. I bet there are a lot of San Franciscans who would happily endure a small apartment if they could have cheap rent!
