The VW TDI New Beetle. It beats the hybrids on Earth day getting 45mpg. Ours gets 43 mpg. Diesels are also known to run 3-400,000 miles. In Calif it doesn't even need to pass smog. Diesel gas doesn't fluctuate as much in price, so sometimes it's cheaper, and sometimes it's not. --But for 45mpg who cares? lol

I just bought a new car (not a hybrid, but a crossover); however, when I was out looking, I saw the new Honda hybrid crossover... it was very nice and gets 40 in town and 43 highway. Check it out!

Oh, and forgot to say, the price tag was in mid to upper 20K range.
