A family room used to be a term that was used often to describe the main living space. Then you would have an addition living room that would be more formal. The term family room has today been replaced by the term great room.

It's usually a room that is in addition to a formal living room. We use this description so buyers understand there are two different living spaces. In most cases it will be a living and a family room in the same home. I hope that clears it up for you.

A family room is equivalent to a den or great room. It is a room used for family gatherings and every day relaxation. It is in addition to a living room.

"A family room is an informal, all-purpose room in a house similar to a living room . The family room is designed to be a place where family and guests gather for group recreation like talking, reading, watching TV, and other family activities. Often, the family room is located adjacent to the kitchen, and at times, flows into it with no visual breaks.

I would describe it as an 'informal' living room, or living space. The community center of the house where you go to kick back and put your feet up. Contrary to a living room which tends to be a little more formal. Keep your feet off the furniture in there! The family room can be on the main level or a lower level.

For us it means the main room when we come in to our house. Our family spends most of our time there, playing games, talking about our days, and just being together as a family. I don't know if that helps you, but for us it is about how we use the room as a family.
