Are you looking to buy or sell a home?
Commissions are negotiable and you will find that they vary from company to company and even agent to agent (within the same company). The most important question to ask is, "What are you going to do for the X% that you charge?" Also, be sure to find out what your "NET Profit/Loss" will be because that is really the most important number. That's the number that you will walk away with when all is said and done. Lastly, interview several agents and decide on the value that he/she is going to bring you for the amount of commission that you are paying and choose someone that you feel comfortable with.

It is illegal to fix commissions under the Sherman Act, so there is no set commission in real estate. In my area, commissions unless they are negotiated run about 5-6%. There is further discussion about commissions in real estate here and here.
If you are looking to sell, you can negotiate your RE commission, sell yourself as a FSBO or use a combination of a flat fee MLS service with a menu of individually priced services. As the owner, you make the call on how best to sell your property.
