What questions should I ask when picking a neighborhood?

Please give me the questions you think are important when choosing a neighborhood.

Here is one to get us atarted:

*  How close will you be to your employment? Driving a long distance may get old in a hurry, and with the cost of gasoline these days

Outside of the general convenience of the location to work or shopping, I think that you should find out other things too like:

Who typically lives there?
What types of sectors employ neighborhood residents?
How educated are the residents of the area?
How safe is the area/crime types and rate?
How are the schools?
Does the neighborhood function like a neighborhood or is it a collection of houses?
Are there any pending zoning changes to worry about?

Neighborhoods vary a lot and you can't take a house out of it's neighborhood. It is wise to make sure that it feels comfortable to you before you buy. Walk the area, talk to neighbors, go at different times of day and try to get a feel of who lives there and weather you would like to have them as neighbors.
