What should I look for when buying a century home?

Looking at a 3000 sq ft colonial century home in NE Ohio. Needs windows and eventually an updated furnace (also to add a/c). Also needs the Federal Pacific electrical box replaced.
What else should I be looking for that may be hiding itself until I buy this home?

Foundations, wiring and plumbing would probably be top 3. You also need to consider things like sewer lines and insulation. Older homes can be great and worth the extra time, but before you buy you really need to have an inspector or contractor that is familiar with older homes to do an inspection.

Inspecting a 100+ house is not the same as inspecting a 20 year old house. A good inspector can tell you the difference between an old system that needs replacement or an old system that is just fine. They can also help you create a timetable for replacement of things from most important to least so you can budget better and know what to expect.

I looked at a home recently that needed a new electrical box as the house had the original box from right after fire was invented. If the box is as old as the house or has not been updated in the last 50-60 years, chances are the house has knob and tube wiring which will need to be replaced.
