Don't expect a "super deal," and meet the agent or landlord in person.

I'd say you should look at a few units in your price range. Then read your lease and ask questions. Don't be afraid to look into average utility costs if such expenses are not included. If you don't understand something you need to ask.

Zillow sometimes provides rent estimates.  Make sure you meet the landlord and always read a lease completely before signing it.

Rental process:  watch out for scams.   Zillow's FAQ on scams and internet fraud is a good place to start to identify red flags.

Get a feeling for rent amounts in your area by looking widely on the internet.

Pull up the state's landlord tenant laws on the internet and study carefully.

When signing a lease, read it first!   Ask questions if you don't understand.  Ask for a day or two to consider it if you need input.

Before moving in, do a walk through with a check list and a camera in hand.  Document the condition of the place (good things as well as bad).

Never send money for keys.  Never rent sight unseen.
