As Randolph Leslie Smith says.
Basically, any pre-1950s home with a big windowed kitchen that hasn't been recently updated can be referred to as a "country kitchen."

I'm afraid I will probably have to agree with Hamp when he says "ugly kitchen"...I am not into the country decor and these kitchens probably don't have granite counters and stainless appliances like I prefer...from the pictures I've seen when they describe a country kitchen it looks like they have wallpaper, light colors and light wood. I just wondered from a Realtor's language if I was thinking on the right lines... Thanks!

The definition varies regionally and according to the level of knowledge of the person writing the description. Generally, it means spacious, with lots of trim, and paler colors like white and yellow. Or, it may mean wallpaper with a lot of small flowers and checked curtains. Or, if the house is older and somewhat rural it may mean, as Hamp hints, indescribable kitchen.

I could be totally wrong, but here in Washington State, many old farmhouse designs have a kitchen that spans the entire width of the house. Some floor plans just make the kitchen simply huge. These huge "Country Kitchens" are spacious and are often set up to feed large families & friends, workers and hired help. They often have the dining table(s) within the same big area, perhaps an additional intimate breakfast nook, rather than a separate dining area. Most are extraordinary.
That's my GUESS ! At least that is what comes to mind if you are talking Pacific Northwest Country.

Country kitchens are characterized by their wide-beamed wood flooring as well as white-washed wood trim and cabinets. Country kitchens also have a lot of natural light either from large picture windows or skylights. Lots of countertop space and storage make these kitchens beautiful and functional

When a listing says "country kitchen", what exactly does that mean?
