Flip a coin. If you use anything on the new backsplash that requires grout, you WILL get grout on the cabinets. What will be easier? Cleaning grout off the old cabinet surface or cleaning grout off the newly painted surface? Could be either. . I think it is easier to cover counters than it is to cover cabinets. If you mask off the newly painted cabinets you run the risk of pulling paint off with the tapeif replacing the cabinets is out of the budget, look at having them refaced. Yes, painting is perfectly acceptable. Just be VERY sure 100% of all the old dirt and grease is removed and be sure to rough up the surface.
