When will Zillow take into account solar electric and solar thermal features?

Solar power and heating solutions add tremendous value to a home.  Is Zillow going to begin accounting for that in the home value?

"Is Zillow going to begin accounting for that in the home value?" -

There was some indication that Zillow was working on some kind of database for the "my estimate" feature that was disabled a little over a year ago.  But then they recently posted they are having difficulty with that, and don't expect to provide the "my estimate" again.

And there is just not enough data for homes with and without alternative energy, and the sizing of the alternative energy product to do any decent modeling on in any of the counties in the U.S. presently.  So no, they will not begin accounting for that in the estimates.  That is why it is considered a "starting point".  Those kinds of details need to be adjusted for by the users of the numbers, not by the estimating method.

Don't forget when calculating the value based on the money saved in electric and gas bills, to put in the typical extra costs for re-roofing.

There are several threads already on calculating the "value" of such systems, if it is relevant to you.  Use the "keyword" box above.

At the moment, properties are not selling for a substantial premium in most areas due to solar systems.

Zillow gets it's information from other sites, it doesn't estimate value on real estate. You, as a homeowner, can claim your property and add features. Solar will add some value to a property, but value depends on so many other factors too, including how much extra a buyer is willing to pay for it to make it worth his investment. When properties start selling for a lot higher because of solar features, that information will eventually reflect on sites like Zillow.
